The short story Sinigang is written by Marby Villaceran narrates how Liza, the main character, deals with the issue of her father who had an extramarital affair with Sylvia, and consequently had a son named Lem.
MORAL VALUES
One thing that we can get in a short story is the moral values which we can apply in our daily life. Short stories can even change our perception about life because of the lessons that they can give to us. Sinigang by Marby Villaceran gave me different values which I can use or apply in my life. This story made me realize many things especially about families.
This story thought me to be humble in life, learn to forgive and not to harbor resentment toward others, especially your loved ones. Whatever he did wrong, maybe he had a good reason.
Learn how to forgive even you still don’t forget about it but it’s part of the process of accepting someone’s mistake. Forgiving them makes your feelings light and at ease. People commit mistakes and so you are so learn how to understand the situation no matter how hard it is and learn how to forgive. Even God forgive us on our sin so who we are to not forgive other. Forgiving means setting your self free from that situation and choosing yourself to be happy.
The thing that I also learned in this story is to be faithful to your partner. Even if I don’t have a romantic relationship with anyone, I can still apply this lesson for the future specifically if I were to have a family. We can see in the story the effects of having an extramarital affair with another guy or woman. It can break trust, can destroy a relationship, can make someone suffer emotionally and can cause family problems which will highly affect the children. I actually know what it feels like to be in a family with an issue the same with the story. Those effects really happened in our family that is why I can really relate to the story. I even promised myself that I won’t commit adultery because I really know what it feels like to be a victim. You have to be sure of the person you are going to marry so your marriage will be successful amidst the other problems that you may encounter.
IMPACT TO US AS A 21ST CENTURY LEARNER
As a 21st century learner and as a impact to us, Forgiveness is a choice not an option .It’s very sad when members of the same family do not talk with each other. “No family is perfect.We Argue, we fight, we even stop talking to each other at times. But in the End family is family”. The love will always be there.
The lessons I learned in the amazing short story “Sinigang” is it will teach every reader about the importance of having a strong foundation of relationships between family members, respecting each other, being strong, apologizing and forgiving. Especially to the families who are experiencing the same situation in the story.
